About
The Brevistory
It all started from the union of 3 youth groups who were organized by Bro.
Alex Manongdo to represent the voice of the congregation on a 5 pm live radio
mass at Baguio Cathedral presided by Rev. Fr. Jay Alipio who was then the
manager of MPBC (Mountain Province Broadcasting Corporation).
For the first time, these 22 young people from
Sacred Heart Community, and Tropang Kid Concerns served together on the 18th of
April 1999. From a simple acquaintance, a special friendship among them
bloomed. Their mass service was something they looked forward to every Sunday.
Love, acceptance, and unexplainable joy bonded the group that an hour together
was never enough. Sunday after Sunday, walk-ins and invited friends came to
join the service. Little by little, this simple service became their commitment
to express that growing love for the Source of Music and Life. Moreover, this
became a venue for the maturity of these young people. Here they were able to
express their true selves and faith freely without any qualms and fear of
rejection.
What to Name?
With the groups’ joyful aura, people came to notice them and were inspired
by the way they served. People began to brand them names such as MPBC choir,
Cathedral youth choir, Sacred Heart music ministry, Rivers choir etc. Moved by
the Spirit, the group wanted to be identified not only as a music ministry but
with a name that would express their calling as young soldiers of Christ.
Hence, after several days of discernment, sharings, prayers, and pangungulit
of some members, a date was set to proclaim their name. It was a stormy Sunday
afternoon of June 6, 1999. The BREVIARIANS was born in honor of
obviously chosen with Divine intervention.
The Name Defined…
The Breviarians, or BREVS for short, have created an impact to the city of
pronounce it right at first. Others would simply give comments about the group.
It seemed like making a difference somehow created noise in their environment.
But to the BREVS, that did not matter. Being a BREV does not simply mean
belonging to a non-exclusive Eucharistic Liturgical Community of talented young
people who initiatively work to fill in the needs of the Church. But more so,
Brevs pertains to their individuality - a person who does nothing but the best
for God; a person who is simply capable of loving and serving selflessly; a
person who wants to BRing EVery Soul TO Christ the King; a person who is a true disciple; a person whose ideal
is Christ. And of course, a person who prays and promote the
BREVIARY.
What the BREVS Do
Despite the many hardships, storms, persecutions, trials, and rejections,
the young community under the shepherding of Bro. A, all the more grew in
number and were more filled with enthusiasm and zeal to serve the Lord in every
way they can with pure hearts. Every member that comes in was inflamed with the
burning desire and love for the Lord as of a new Pentecost. Thus, their
ministry in serving masses did not stop there. Soon their weekday schedule was
filled-up by prayer meetings in banks, dormitories, and homes; Eucharistic
Vigils to different parishes; brev-on-mission school and community apostolate
(inside and outside Bagiuio); wedding and wake services; recollection and
retreats; anti-drug campaigns; concert tours and guestings; radio programs;
seminars and workshops; ecotours; youth gatherings and congresses; and a whole
lot more! Truly brev is a verb ... a
Christian in Action."
Major BREV Activities
God’s hands were indeed at work for His grace has sufficed the community to
be motivated with love to work for His purpose. And to those whom He has given
much, more is expected.
God’s providence has always kept the community moving without fear. On the
Great Jubilee year 2000 of our Lord, the Brevs launched the First Breviarian
Big Tent Festival – a Eucharistic Liturgical Youth Leadership Training Camp for
all young people so as to make them more effective servers in their own
communities and parishes. Praise God for the inspiration He shed on Bro.
A!during a Eucharistic Congress he attended in February of 2000.
This same year was also the staging of the first Brevstock, a CCM
thanksgiving concert, as a way of thanking the Lord for the gift of the year
that has passed and for the year yet to come.
These 2 major Brev events have become yearly events that young people of the
Vicariate of Baguio and
Benguet and other places look forward to. Aside from that, they also have
produced other brev activities such as Small tent series, Pasch, MOB (Meeting
Of Brevs), Attic, and B.I. Definitely, they are not stopping there. More can be
expected, as Jesus is full of surprises.

“We, the Brevs, are in our 8th year and getting bigger
each year. Every year, new batches come. Every day, new friends are found.
Every moment, a soul is touched. Young people in the Brevs come and go. Some
stay while others are sent out to their “positions.” But no matter what
happens, once a Brev always a Brev; for when the love of Christ has touched a
soul, that person would never stop loving. Besides, Brevs is where the welcome
never ends. Want to know more? Come and
see!!!”
